Video of a sandbox equipped with a Kinect 3D camera and a projector to project a real-time colored topographic map with contour lines onto the sand surface. The sandbox lets virtual water flow over the surface using a GPU-based simulation of the Saint-Venant set of shallow water equations. We (the UC Davis W.M. Keck Center for Active Visualization in the Earth Sciences, http://bit.ly/IxYhIl) built this for an NSF-funded project on informal science education. These AR sandboxes will be set up as hands-on exhibits in science museums, such as the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) or Lawrence Hall of Science. Project home page: http://bit.ly/J3BiJP The sandbox is based on the original idea shown in this video: http://bit.ly/J7O8mn The water flow simulation is based on the work of Kurganov and Petrova, “a second-order well-balanced positivity preserving central-upwind scheme for the Saint-Venant system.”

What is the Dérive App This video shows the influences that helped create the Dérive app and how the project works and will grow over time. See more on website: http://bit.ly/w8NpOp Subtitles available for: English, Italian, Portuguese (more coming soon). Additional help: Text Editing - Matteo Lucchetti Video Production - Özgür Demirci Camera - Kate Craftsova Italian subtitle editing - Nicoletta Daldanise Portuguese subtitle editing - Maria Celina Cachucho Sound - Earsmack (Four Note Improvisation, OP1 More Fiddling) [http://bit.ly/yXjLOU] Video Text: Derive is an urban exploration application influenced by Situationist thought on the experience of urban space. The Derive app can be viewed on a mobile phone. The application will deliver a task card meant to be an instigator in an urban exploration, every 3min a new task card is dealt, changing the course of the journey. These task cards aim to create new urban experiences for the user by overlaying the personal viewpoints of the tasks onto the urban exploration. So the card you submitted a week ago could alter the experience of a user today. So who and what are the Situationists? The Situationist International, formed in 1957, as a movement they represented an international reaction to the capitalist way of understanding urban space and modernism. The situationists used the Derive, meaning to drift, as a means to understand how modern cities were fragmenting in function, character and energy. They used it as a tool, to intertwine the subjective and the objective experience of the physical space of a city. The Derive was a way to escape a mundane every-day experience of urban space, such as going to work or shopping, now, the Derive App has been created for a new authentic take on the re-thinking of urban planning in contemporary cities. The Derive application has been built as an open source project, able to be added to by the public, it will grow and change over time. You have the chance to add to you own city, or to create new experiential derives (such as night tasks, acting directions, photography experiments), its up to you as part of the urban enthusiast community to decide. Try Derive today and if your interested; find out how easy it is to add your own content to Derive.

he SMSlingshot is an autonom working device, equipped with a high frequency radio, hacked arduino board, laser and batteries. Text messages can be typed on a phone-sized wooden keypad which is integrated in an also wooden slingshot. After the message is finished, the user can aim on a media facade and send/shoot the message straight to the targeted point. It will then appear as a coloured splash with the message written within. The text message will also be real-time twittered - just in case.

lumarca is a truly volumetric display which allows viewers to see three dimensional images and motion. The system requires only a computer, a projector, and common materials found at most hardware stores. This provides an affordable platform for artists to design compelling content that conveys information, narrative, and aesthetic information in a new way. Music by Nullsleep: www.nullsleep.com
